MotoGP | Sprint races: what we need to know

Repsol MotoGP Paddock

Sprint races are set to be one of the biggest shake-ups in the 2023 MotoGP season, with this year being the first to have these featured in the Premier Class. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Sprint races will be featured at every round for the Premier Class
  • These races are half normal race distance, with 50% of full-race points awarded
  • Friday practice sessions will be extended, with combined times being used to decide who is hitting Q2
  • Free practice 4 has been dropped from the schedule to allow for sprint races, with FP3 having its time reduced to 30 minutes also

Dorna have implemented sprint races to try and bring a higher level of viewership to MotoGP. Chances are, the sting of Rossi leaving the paddock has impacted viewership, and this is a step toward retaining numbers.

“It has been the aim of the championship to try to improve everything as much as we can, working in all areas. We have been looking at other sports, different possibilities, to offer a better show. It has been discussed with the FIM, the manufacturers and teams.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna CEO

There’s no determination of what the impact of these races will be on the teams or riders – a lot more work will need to come from both sides to maintain their staggering performance level. As a spectator and a fan? I’m thrilled – more racing! As a motorcycle rider? I weep for the riders. Regardless of anything, it’s going to be a great watch!

“The great fights with your strongest rivals are always the biggest motivation. When you win easily, it’s not the same taste.”

Valentino Rossi
